“When did you know?” I asked him when we were lying in the darkness. It wasn’t totally dark, of course. The moon shone through the windows, and in this sea of white, everything looked ethereal – as though we were in the realms of floating clouds.

“I don’t know. Maybe it was in England. Maybe I’d known it all along, and when you came out of my mother’s hospital room, something in my mind and heart suddenly clicked. That was when I knew.” He paused. I knew he wasn’t going to let me off the hook. “When did you know?”

“I don’t quite know either,” I confessed. “Maybe it was that night in the kitchen when you shared your cookies with me.”

This elicited a laugh from him.

“I shared my cookies with you,” he mused.

“Well, I did have a crush on you. Ever since that night in the elevator, I kept thinking about you.”

“I kept thinking about you, too.”

“But why? You’re gorgeous. Any girl you fucked would think about you for at least a month. But you . . . you can have anyone!”

He laughed again. “Careful. All this praise is going to my head.”

“Surprisingly, it hasn’t gone to your head.”

“Damn. That’s the best praise I’ve gotten in years! But seriously, you don’t know how stunning you are?” he teased.

“No, tell me.”

“Now this is going to go to your head.”

On we went, back and forth, teasing each other, complimenting each other – getting to know each other thoroughly as soul mates.

When we finally fell asleep, we couldn’t have envisioned the blitzkrieg that was about to be visited upon us.
